Who Has Seen the Wind: Rossetti Poem

Here’s a neat little poem written by Christina Rossetti. It’s called: Who has seen the wind

Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you.
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.
Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I.
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.

Of the Poem:

I think I like it because it reminds me of John 3:8:

The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is everyone that is born of the Spirit.*

There’s no doubt in my mind at all that this verse was in her head when she wrote this. I'll have to ask her.

*KJV, which I think makes it sound better.

John,

I didn't recall this one; I'm glad you posted it. Very cool!

I think you are quite right that she was thinking of that passage (and probably thinking of it in the KJV version too!) when she wrote this.

And yes, the KJV does sound better than others, especially in the Psalms and Isaiah.

My favorite post to date, John. A very intuitive observation and excellent connection to scripture! Almost too coincidental not to be the inspiration for the poem. I like both the poem and the verse.

I also agree on the appeal of the lyrical quality of the KJV. And standing even more strongly in its favor is the dominance of the KJV Authorized Version from about 1700 or so, until displaced by the proliferation of newer translations in the 2nd half of the 20th century.

I'm also very much enjoying your insightful analysis in all of your posts, and even more so your original poetry. God has given you a special gift. Thanks for sharing it with the world.
